August 11, 2025, 10:00 – 19:00, Ewha Womans University ECC Conference Hall

A workshop dedicated to establishing an early warning system for landslides in Nepal, aggravated by climate change, and addressing issues of sustainable recovery, was successfully held on August 11 at the Ewha Womans University ECC Conference Hall and related venues.

The event saw a great turnout, attracting approximately 60 experts. Attendees included Nepalese officials such as Rupa B.K., Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Nepal, as well as experts from the Korean side, including Yong-sang Choi, CEO of RainbirdGEO, Dr. Seon Ki Park, President of the Korean Meteorological Society, Distinguished Professor Chang-Hoi Ho of Ewha Womans University, and Mr. Seok Joon CHO, the 9th Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Representatives from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and experts from the Korea Forest Service were also present.

During the workshop, presentations highlighted the rapid changes in Nepal’s forest environment caused by climate change and the resulting damage from landslides. Proposals from relevant experts on solving these issues were also introduced. Attendees showed particular interest in RainbirdGEO’s solution, which utilizes analysis of Korea’s GK2A geostationary meteorological satellite to provide early warnings for Nepal’s landslides

Following the workshop, Secretary Rupa B.K. and her delegation visited Korea Forest Satellite Research Institute on August 12 to receive briefings from officials.

RainbirdGEO, the organizer of this workshop, has been at the forefront of addressing early warning issues for disasters and calamities in developing countries across the Asia-Pacific region using meteorological satellite analysis technology. The company is also providing information on corn planting and harvesting in Tanzania, Africa, through the analysis of European meteorological satellites.

Yong-sang Choi, CEO of RainbirdGEO, who is also a current professor in the Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering at Ewha Womans University, is a specialist in early warning systems for disasters, customized climate risk consulting, and meteorological satellite content planning. He is leading efforts to solve climate risk, which is one of humanity’s greatest challenges.
